The Browns had little success on the field, but were the most popular team in the city during the early years. 1944 marked a
turning point
for the franchise in which it competed for its only championship against the rival St. Louis Cardinals. The
series would end up being for much more than a title. The Browns lost in 6 games and it started to become clear the city could not support 2 teams. The Browns could no longer field a competitive team and attendance
dropped. Both teams came close to moving, but when
Anheuser-Busch president Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals in 1953 the Browns could no longer compete. The Cardinals immediately bought Sportsman's Park and the Browns were sold following the season.
